Have you seen how much it costs to get a recipe box? A while back I was in the market for one, but quickly realized how expensive they can be! So, I stopped my search for a while, unwilling to pay an arm and a leg for a simple little box. A quick Etsy search will show that to get a decent one the price can get up to around 40 bucks, then you add recipe cards and you’re getting close to $80-$100! Sorry, but I’m not going to pay that when I can easily make one myself and save the money for something better, like oh…shoes, maybe…
So, me and my little baby boy ran over to Target on Monday on the hunt for anything that could fit some paper I have lying around the house that is sized at 4.5″x6.25″. The standard recipe card is 4×6. My card stock is close enough.
I was about to leave Target, thinking I was out of luck and may have to run over to Hobby Lobby when I saw what I needed! A little square wood box with a lid! My card stock is too big to keep the lid on there, so I figured I’ll just unscrew the hinges and take the lid off. Here’s the wood box I found in the craft section at Target (excuse the sloppy photo…I was already in the process of painting when I realized I forgot to snap a pic). If you want to buy off Amazon, I found this one which looks pretty similar to the one I used and the lid is even tall enough to keep the lid on: Walnut Hollow Recipe Card Box with Hinged Lid, Unfinished Wood for Arts, Crafts, Hobbies & Home Décor
This little wood box is crying for paint. The wood is unfinished and all dry and splintery; perfect for a nice coat of paint…or stain if you like the wood grain look better. For just around $10 for the wood box and a few dollars for paint (which I found on the same aisle in Target…wow, do they have great little paint color options) I now have a gorgeous recipe box that is totally unique to me. If I weren’t quite so lazy, I could have even painted my initial or some kind of stencil image on the front or sides, but nah, I’ll just keep it simple. If you like the metallic gold paint I used, here’s some great metallic paint color options: Martha Stewart Crafts Multi-Surface Metallic Acrylic Craft Paint in Assorted Colors (2-Ounce), 32103 Gold
If I’m making my own recipe box, why not make some super cheap recipe cards myself too? I had some white paper lying around already cut out to the size I need so I’m using that. But, if you’re like most people and don’t have a huge stock of 4×6 card stock at home then just run over to Hobby Lobby and buy the thickest card stock they have. Then take it over to Kinko’s and have them cut it down to the size you need for you.
To make my own recipe cards I just used some adorable Washi tape from Target and stuck it on the paper in really cute ways and then wrote out my recipes from there. I found some really cute washi tape here: Washi Masking Tape Set of 24, Decorative Masking Tape Collection,Tape for DIY Crafts and Gift Wrapping Office Party Supplies
I also envisioned some really cute, patterned dividers for each category of the recipe box, each in a different bright and cheery pattern. So, I found a notebook of cute paper at Target (also sold at Hobby Lobby) and just wrapped my 4×6 cards in paper and taped it on there. Then I used Washi tape to make the little tabs. I wrote the category in real small writing on the tape. Here is some adorable paper I found on amazon if you’d rather not get dressed and go out to the store 😉 Heidi Swapp Hello Today 4×6 Paper Pad
Pick your own favorite patterns to make it your own. The look of it will completely change with your own choice of paint color and paper patterns.
