Don’t want the standard plastic high chair ugglying up your dining room? Me neither. That’s why I found an alternate route. Old wood high chairs are coming back in style big time and you can make them super duper adorable. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a hand-me-down high chair that I could use, so I found my own. If you have one for free from a family member or friend, even better. But if you have to buy one, try looking on craigslist or Ebay local. I had no luck with Craigslist, but I wasn’t patient enough to wait. When I get going on a project I need it NOW or else I’ll obsess and lose sleep dreaming it up in my mind, so I did a google image search and found an unfinished wood high chair at www.babyfactory2u.com for $95. Although I could have found a used high chair much cheaper on Craigslist, I was willing to pay the extra money since I really wanted to get started fast.
Wherever you choose to acquire your wood high chair, it doesn’t matter. If it’s unfinished wood then you are ready to paint. If it’s finished wood then you will probably need to sand it down before painting. I used cans of spray paint I bought from Lowe’s rather than a paint brush. It was much faster to just spray, let dry, spray, let dry then worry with brushing every nook and cranny with a paint brush.
Once it’s sprayed and dried, you may want to seal it with a clear sealant. You know this high chair is really going to get some abuse especially as your baby turns toddler. The extra clear coat will serve to protect your adorable paint job.
Now, all you need is a soft cushion to pad your sweet little one’s tush from the hard wood surface. Check out Carousel Designs’ fabulous high chair pads. They are simply amazing. I bought mine from Carousel and it looks so good even after over 2 years of use. It’s been washed many times and has held up without any problems. I promise you will not be disappointed.
So to sum it up, find yourself any wood highchair, paint it, seal it, get an adorable high chair pad and you have got yourself the cutest high chair ever. I get so many compliments on mine and I know you will too!
